THE CURRENT SELECTION

Standalone DACs

What to check on a used DAC or amp

Source, output and power

Confirm the input your source provides, the headphone or line output you need, and the required power supply. A standalone DAC is not automatically a headphone amplifier. Check mains voltage and the included adapter before ordering.

Connections and controls

Look for disclosed port wear, loose connectors, knob or switch issues, and the playback checks performed. For sensitive IEMs or demanding headphones, ask about the intended pairing rather than choosing by power figures alone.

Portable versus desktop ownership

For portable units, read charging observations and cable requirements; full battery-runtime testing is not standard. For desktop units, check dimensions, supply, remote and other included parts. Missing accessories should be clear in the listing.

A–D grades describe appearance only. Read the actual-unit photos, functional notes, included accessories and dispatch information separately.
